Don't let 6 Music be put to death!

Cifs issues resolved

Apr 2 2008

I recently bought a freecom network drive. It's was cheap, i.e. the cheapest, but promised support for both kind of computers - Win and Mac. What could go wrong? Of course I soon ran into problems trying to mount it in Ubuntu. Both mounting directly from command line or adding an entry to fstab would give me the error:

My life as a fakenger

Dec 13 2007
I ride a singlespeed (lamely), own a crumpler bag and from time to time, I even roll up my trousers. Unfortunately I have a desk job, only do a few paltry miles a day and don't have the most chiseled thighs or even suffer from erectile disfunction. How, you may ask, can I live with myself? Easy I tell you, with god's help I get by. She's good like that, she'd be even better if she was real (and hot). I digress however and need to abandon theology and get back to my confessional. I currently ride an old steel roadie that I've converted to single speed.

Virgin Trains - not exactly first class

Nov 29 2007

I would never travel first class on a UK train under normal circumstances. The cost is prohibitive and no journey is long enough to really merit it. Yet I collect my tickets from the little red machine, only to discover that I will be traveling among the gentler classes. I'm still not entirely sure how this happened. The price I paid seemed reasonable but I know, from previous encounters with Virgin's website, that little makes sense when booking online.

Remember the Erikson golden age?

Nov 22 2007
I just watched a dismal performance by the ever insipid England football team. Needing only a draw to qualify for Euro 2008, they lurched to a 3-2 defeat at home to an impressive Croatian team. McClaren opted for a change in goal and Carson promptly threw one in with his first touch of the game. They never got going after that and conceded another soon after. Shell shocked at half time, the hard working Peter Crouch was the only player who had looked interested. Could McClaren turn it around? He wheeled out Beckham and also brought on Defoe after the break.

(Only) 40 years of Aboriginal suffrage in Australia

May 26 2007

Today marks the anniversary of the referendum that gave the Aborigines of Australia the vote. It just doesn't seem long enough does it? It's scary to think it was only 11 years before I was born.

Now don't get me wrong, I love Australia and there's a lot to be proud of. However, the natural beauty, the work hard - play harder ethic and the myriad sporting achievements of the Clever Country don't excuse the way we've treated those who were there first.

I know it can't take away the hurt but this Australian is sorry.

teabags - my arch enemy

May 26 2005
Why use teabags? For a start they are so much more expensive than just buying loose tea. Then they have a shorter shelf life than loose tea because the higher surface area to volume ratio means they lose potency quicker. Furthermore, I just don't like the idea of soaking that papery, meshy stuff that they're made out of it my hot beverage anyway. It's not as if just waiting for the leaves to settle in a teapot or in the bottom of your mug is all that irritating is it? Obviously this is a bit of a tongue in cheek rant, but I do find the rise of the tea bag a bit troubling.
